In a previous occasion, we reported on how a group of Russian hackers had been considered the main suspects of infiltrating the servers of one of Microsoft's clients: SolarWinds. On this occasion, as reported ReutersThis group of hackers not only broke into the mail servers provided by Microsoft, but also were able to access part of its source code, this according to their official representatives.
For computer security experts, this would be a worrying alert about the ambition of spies. Since the source code consists of the underlying instructions that allow the execution of a part or an operating system, it is typically among the best kept secrets by technology companies. Historically, Microsoft has been particularly cautious about protecting it.
However, it is not clear to what extent or to what extent the source code was compromised since it is not known how much access the hackers had. The company that used to be led by Bill Gates has already spoken out and said it found malicious software coming from SolarWinds, but that the disclosure of some of its source code occurred in a blog post.
